Arts in the School Program Provides Zydeco Experience
By Heather Murschel, Black Hills Pioneer
Terrance Simien and the Zydeco Experience brought the flavor of the deep south to Spearfish when they performed at Spearfish Middle School Thursday. The Grammy award-winning band’s high-energy, upbeat music entertained and engaged nearly 1,000 middle and elementary school students.
Zydeco is a type of music that originated with the Creole people of Southwest Louisiana, and to enhance the student’s experience even more Simien provided most of the students with official Mardi Gras beads.
The event was sponsored by the Spearfish Foundation for Public Education, the National Endowment for the Arts,, Arts Midwest and the South Dakota Arts Council. The SFPE worked in conjunction with the Spearfish Arts Center to bring these artists to the schools.
